The Family and the Winery<\/h2><\/span>

Our winery is now managed by the third generation of the family. Hermann Schmalzried completed his training as a viticultural technician at the State Winery in Weinsberg as one of its youngest graduates. At that time, as a young winemaker, he took over the few vineyard areas of his father, which he increased over the years to about 10 hectares. In 1986, he built today’s significantly larger winery at the foothills of the Korber Kopf and thus moved out of the village center of Korb.<\/p>\n<\/div>

Margarete Schmalzried has been advicing and supporting her husband ever since they jointly founded the winery.<\/p>\n

Since 2011, son Benedikt has been firmly and passionately involved in the business and enriches the winery and its wines through his modern and creative oenological skills. He is responsible for the “Generations” wine line. After 3 years in the Palatinate and Weinsberg, he completed his studies as a viticultural technician in Veitsh\u00f6chheim, Germany. Benedikt gained his practical experience in wineries in Alsace, France and in Burgenland, Austria.<\/p>\n

Since 2013, daughter Helen has joined the familiy winery. She completed her bachelor’s degree in enology at the Geisenheim University of Applied Sciences and gained her practical experience in wineries in Tuscany, Italy and New York, USA.<\/p>\n

Maximilian is the youngest son of the Schmalzried successors. He completed his training as a winemaker at the Weinsberg State Winery. Next stop: Berlin, where Max successfully passed his IHK certified sommelier and WSET Level 3 Award in Wines and Spirits. He gained practical experience in wineries in Tuscany, Italy and Marlborough, New Zealand. His extensive training has involved him directly in the vineyards as well as in sales.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>

The winery and its philosophy<\/h2><\/span>

In the vineyards is worked very nature-conscious and traditional manual labor to ultimately increase the quality of the wines and to preserve, protect and promote the soil, flora, fauna and abundant wildlife. Only with an intact ecological system can we achieve healthy and honest grapes. In the vineyards, the use of herbicides, pesticides and artificial fertilizers is completely avoided and only natural, protective means are used. The vinification takes place in a natural way. The fermentation of the wines is carried out mainly with natural yeasts from the vineyard, which promises a variety of flavors and profound wines. The red wines undergo a long maceration after the gentle disruption of the grapes and, depending on the quality level and type of wine, an aging in steel tanks or oak barrels. The white wines are vinified using the so-called champagne pressing method and are matured with long and cool storage on the fine lees to produce wines full of character and expression.<\/p>\n<\/div>

The Schmalzried winery has been cultivating its vineyards in Korb, in the Rems Valley, for more than 100 years now. Today, the family business cultivates 10 hectares on the large vineyards Korber Kopf, Hanweiler Berg and Kleinheppach. Hermann Schmalzried decided in 1975 to convert his land to controlled organic viticulture and was thus the first organic winery in W\u00fcrttemberg. As a co-founder of the EcoVin association, he demonstrated futuristic thinking even then. In years of pioneering work, he still produces harmonious and authentic wines from top vineyards. In the last 10 years, the ecologist of the first hour dealt with the icing on the cake of sustainable and health-conscious wine production: biodynamic viticulture.
